How can Christian couples communicate with more care?
Practice listening, expressing feelings, and agreeing on a next step with this Christian couples communication exercise.
Choose a calm moment and one topic
Ask whether this is a good time to talk. Choose one recent, specific situation instead of reviewing every past disagreement. The aim is to understand each other and agree on a useful next step. James 1:19 offers a helpful starting point: be willing to listen and slow down your response.
Describe your experience clearly
Try this structure: When this happened, I felt this, because this matters to me. What I would appreciate is this specific action. For example: When our plans changed without a conversation, I felt overlooked. I would appreciate a quick check-in before we commit to something.
Reflect before responding
The listening partner can say: What I hear is that you felt overlooked when the plans changed. Have I understood? Let your partner correct the summary before you explain your perspective. Understanding a feeling does not require agreeing with every interpretation.
Take a pause with a plan to return
If either person becomes too frustrated to listen, agree on a pause and a specific time to return to the conversation. Use that time to settle yourself and consider what you need to communicate. When you return, choose one practical request each rather than trying to solve everything at once.
Agree on one action
Write down one step you both understand, such as checking the calendar together before making weekend plans. Revisit how it went at a calm time. If conversations repeatedly stall, couples coaching can provide a place to practice these skills. This exercise is intended for ordinary disagreements; intimidation, threats, or violence require individual support focused on safety.
